My approach

The primary approach I use is Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP). This is an effective and well researched technique that is based on the findings of neuroscience, attachment theory, and psychodynamic theory.

According to this model, many disorders are based on the emotional effects (i.e., anger, rage, guilt, grief, etc.) of broken attachments between caregivers and child. As life events stir up these attachment-related feelings, anxiety and defenses will develop to block these complex emotions, which leads over time to the development of a "false self." Although these anxieties and defenses are often unconscious, they will result in the development of psychiatric symptoms and physical problems. These frequently include various forms of depression and anxiety, the addictions, psychosomatic issues, and interpersonal problems, to name a few.

In this approach the primary focus is on the experience and regulation of emotion. This is done by first helping the patient to become aware of and to turn against this unconscious process of blocking their attachment-related emotions. Once the feelings are experienced, clients often report an abrupt drop in their anxiety, tension, and other psychological and physical symptoms. By tracking the pathway of emotions and their accompanying physiological sensations, ISTDP can accelerate getting to the "root" of the problem and long standing issues.

This treatment approach has been well researched and shown to be effective in alleviating depression, anxiety, substance abuse, eating disorders and personality problems. More information on the empirical research can be found here.

As an emotion focused therapist, my treatment style is actively engaged, caring, and empathic. I strive to provide support and continual feedback to help you address both your current life challenges and long standing issues.

I enjoy helping individuals find resolution to a wide range of personal concerns and psychological issues, and I believe depth work can be done in a shortened period of time, therefore making therapy cost effective.
